The European Film Festival has dedicated a retrospective to the great Italian director of Apulian roots.
BIOGRAPHY
In 1964 he won the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia competition and got his direction degree with a 27’ essay: Uno due e tre.
He had been teaching direction at Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia from November 1966 to January 1968.
The collaboration with Centro Sperimentale starts again in the 90’s: he is a member of the examination board to the direction, scriptwriting, scenography and costume courses.
At the same time, he holds few workshops and is the tutor of the direction students producing their degree films.
He shoots his first “piece” for the RAI weekly programme Cordialmente, when he still was a Centro Sperimentale student in April-May 1966.
From 1966 to 1980 he produced many RAI culture show, documentaries and enquiries (about fifty) among which: Da una Guerra all’altra, six hours about politics and economics relations in between the two Wars (1976-77); Madame Bovary sono io, a biography by G. Flaubert (1977); L’Italia del boom, a three-hours-show winner of Saint Vincent Award for the best television enquiry (1979). In 1974 Morel's invention is his debut documentary based on the novel by A. Bioy Casares. The film took part in Cannes Film Festival Quinzaine des Réalizateurs and in many other Italian and foreign festivals. Un caso di incoscienza (1984). It was shown at Venice Film Festival in 1984, within the sction “TV Film”, where it was well criticized and claimed by many companies. RAI refused to release it and even though it was the producer, Un caso di incoscienza was broadcasted mid-July late at night. Mikado succeeded in getting it in its catalogue, just few years later, but the film was commercially old fashioned.
